Pituitary autoimmunity encompasses a spectrum of conditions ranging from histologically proven autoimmune hypophysitis to the presence of pituitary antibodies in apparently healhy subjects. Autoimmune hypophysitis (AH) is a rare but increasingly recognized disease of the pituitary gland that still needs a full characterization. The autoantigens target of the autoimmune attack are unknown. The diagnosis of AH is difficult because it is often misdiagnosed as a nonsecreting pituitary adenoma. Pituitary antibodies, a marker of pituitary autoimmunity, are measured by non-antigen specific methods so that their determination has limited clinical value.
