DIFFICULTIES FACED BY MENTORS IN MENTORING PROGRAM OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT IN UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

Mentoring program is regarded as relationship in academic field between supervisory adult called mentor and novice student called mentee. An effective mentoring program is needed for the learners to get the exposure of English language. Truthfully, mentor is a key factor to conduct an effective mentoring program. However, mentors still cannot be freed from various difficulties in fulfilling their task. Based on the research background above, the purposes of this research are to know about the difficulties faced by mentors in the second mentoring program and to describe about the solutions proposed by the mentors to overcome the difficulties in mentoring program of English Language Education Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The design used in this research is qualitative research design. The subject of this research were the mentors in the second mentoring program in 2016. Furthermore, the researcher used semi-structured interview and document analysis as the instruments of this research. Based on the findings, the researcher concluded five difficulties faced by mentors in mentoring program 2016, they are: (1) Mentors had a little understanding of the significance of a proper mentoring system. (2) Mentors had no experience being a mentor. Therefore, they did not know the roles of a mentor (3) The theories and techniques that the mentors have learned from the previous course may not well-matched in mentoring program. (4) MentorsÂ’ reluctance to seek help due to their shyness and prestige. (5) Mentors received a little or inadequate support during mentoring program, such as; uncomfortable locations, the limited time to meet directly with their supervisor and limited facilities like the speakers and LCD projectors. In addition, the main solution to overcome those difficulties lies within mentorsÂ’ training period. It is seen as a fundamental factor to make them feel ready to be a mentor. It will make them more productive and creative in their task as a mentor and they can help their mentee effectively
