A STUDY ON STUDENTS' RECOUNT TEXT WRITTEN BY EIGHT-GRADE STUDENTS OF MTS MUHAMMADIYAH 1 MALANG

Writing is form of communication and one of the important skills that have to be well mastered by students of junior high school. Students are required not only to able to speak, to listen, and to read but also to be able to write. The purpose of this study is to describe recount text in term of generic structure, language features and mechanics composed by the eight-grade students in MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. Related to the purpose above, descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study. The subject of this study is the eight-grade students of class B MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. Furthermore, the instrument of this study is the documents of students' recount text writing. The result showed that from three aspects of recount text: 1) in terms of generic structure, from fifteen students, the writer found that eight students belong to high achievers, five students belong to middle achievers and two students belong to low achievers; 2) in terms of language features, the writer found that five students belong to high achiever, nine students belong to middle achievers and one student belongs to low achiever and; 3) in terms of mechanics, the writer found that eight students belong to high achiever, five students belong to middle achiever and two students belong to low achievers. The findings revealed that the students who represented the middle and high achievers had a good organizing of recount text. On the other hand, it was also revealed that the low achievers were still confused in organizing recount text. Moreover, the low achievers still needed a lot of improvement as they still made a lot of mistakes in the text they wrote
