TEACHING TECHNIQUES IN TEACHING ESP SPEAKING CLASSROOM

Teaching English speaking is a process of transferring the knowledge to the student in order to improve vocabulary and pronunciation the learning of the material. A techniques in teaching ESP speaking is the instructorÂ’s ways in delivering materials to the students through varied activities. This study focused on describing the kinds of techniques used by the instructor in ESP speaking, the problems faced by the instructor in implementing the techniques and the instructorÂ’s way in solving the problems in implementing techniques used by instructor for first semester in Biology classroom at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. In conducting this study, the researcher used qualitative research design. The subject of this study was the ESP instructor for the first semester student in Biology Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The instrument used by the researcher to collect data were observation and interview. The findings of this study showed that the ESP instructor used three techniques in teaching ESP speaking classroom. They were picture describing, story completing and storytelling. First, the instructor implemented picture describing techniques, the students discuss the picture with their groups, then a spokesperson for each group describes the picture to the whole class. Second, the instructor implemented story completion techniques, a teacher starts to tell story, but after a few sentences he or she stops narrating and the students starts to narrate from the point where the previous one stopped. Each students is supposed to add from four to ten sentences. The last, the instructor implemented story telling explained about past tense material and then instructor asked the students to tell of their memorable experience. The problem faced by instructor in implementing the techniques were the students had less vocabulary and afraid to speak up
