A recent trend in the energy sector has been the need to produce clean, carbon free electricity. The solutions have mainly been wind and solar power, which are intermittent renewable energy sources with nonadjustable production. Wide-scale introduction of these production forms require other means to manage balancing demand and supply of power at all times. Energy storages and especially pumped hydro energy storage are widely seen as viable countermeasures for intermittency of renewable power production.
