National audienceThis article aims at answering two questions. The first is about the intensity of socio-spatial inequalities in French cities. The second concerns the ability of public policies at the state, municipal or intermunicipal level, to contain or counteract the reinforcement of socio-spatial inequalities or, conversely, their propensity to feed them. As far as the first question is concerned, whether we take the differences between income households or income differences between municipalities within urban regions, the overall picture that emerges is that of quite moderate levels of inequality, especially when compared with those of countries in North America or the emerging world.
