The chemiosmotic theory suggested by Peter Mitchell (Mitchell, 1961, Nature 191:144-148; see Mitchell, 1979, Science 206:1148-1159 for review) postulated that the energy released upon the oxidation of electron donor substrates is transiently stored as electrochemical proton potential, delta-p across energy-transducing membranes, which acts then as the driving force for the ATP synthesis. Membrane protein complexes can both generate and utilise a transmembrane electrochemical proton potential, either by transmembrane proton transfer or by transmembrane electron transfer coupled to protolytic reactions on opposite sides of the membrane.
