The author discusses suggested changes in organisation and management of Poland’s academic institutions, The conclusions are based on author’s own research conducted at University College London (UCL), and extensive literature on the subject. First, opportunities and threats arising from strong organisational leadership are analysed. The author proposes bestowing vice-chancellors with strategic managerial competencies, departure from democratic elections of university authorities and introduction of the committee system which has proven effective in the United Kingdom.
