This paper attempts to define the current status of 'learning technology' as an emergent area of research. It focuses on the experience of a group of practitioners (the Sudeley group) through a series of seminars and meetings which have been held over the last 18 months and articulates the key characteristics of this group as a 'Community of Practice'. The paper will also reflect briefly on some of the paradoxical implications of the participation of this 'Community of Practice' within the wider 'community of academia'.
