Systematic conservation planning acts on different levels of biodiversity and on different spatial and temporal scales. Some kind of simplification and modelling is needed to understand biodiversity. Concepts of rare species and protected areas allow the estimation of conservation efforts undertaken by society. Different taxa like vascular plants and mosses have various reasons for rarity.
