Sciences et colonisation sous l'Ancien Régime: le cas de la Guyane et des Antilles françaises, XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles

The problematic of this work questions the forms, the role and the importance of the scientific practices in the colonial fact of old regime, starting from the example of Guyana and French West Indies. The introduction presents the historiographical and methodological foundations of this research, at the crossroads of the history of science, cultural history, state history and colonial history. The appendices contain an inventory of sources (archives of colonies and scientific institutions), three bibliographies, and a hundred documents. The first part ("the time of the pioneers, an attempt at archeology of colonial sciences") analyzes the first stages of the construction of a colonial scientific knowledge (between Amerindians, Europeans, Africans); practices of appropriation of space and nature by the first settlers (delimiting, naming, describing); collections, maps and printed works; role of Parisian missionaries and academic pre-academic circles. The second part ("the scientific workings of the colonial machine of the kings of France, set up, 1664-1720"), begins with the regaining of the colonies by the monarchy: in the continuity of the founding acts of Colbert, the Colonial administration and scientific institutions (Academy of Sciences, Jardin du Roi and Observatoire), jointly organize the collection of information (sending qualified specialists and recruitment of local correspondents) while supervising scientific expeditions. The third part ("colonial lights, stake and actors"), studies the major scientific issues of colonization in the eighteenth century: development work, cartography, botany, agronomy, etc. It highlights the complexification of the scientific machinery of the colonial machine, and highlights the emergence of a local scientific population perfectly integrated into the networks of the republic of lettersLa problématique de ce travail interroge les formes, le rôle et l'importance des pratiques scientifiques dans le fait colonial d'ancien régime, à partir de l'exemple de la Guyane et des Antilles françaises. L'introduction présente les fondements historiographiques et méthodologiques de cette recherche, a la croisée de l'histoire des sciences, de l'histoire culturelle, de l'histoire de l'État et de l'histoire coloniale. Les annexes rassemblent un inventaire des sources (archives des colonies et des institutions scientifiques), trois bibliographies, et une centaine de documents. La 1ere partie (« le temps des pionniers. Essai d'archéologie des sciences coloniales ») analyse les premières étapes de la construction d'un savoir scientifique colonial des savoirs (entre amérindiens, européens, africains) ; pratiques d'appropriation de l'espace et de la nature par les premiers colons (délimiter, nommer, décrire) ; collections, cartes et ouvrages imprimes ; rôle des missionnaires et des milieux savant pré-académiques parisiens. La 2eme partie (« les rouages scientifiques de la machine coloniale des rois de France. Mise en place. 1664-1720 »), commence avec la reprise en main des colonies par la monarchie : dans la continuité des actes fondateurs de Colbert, l'administration coloniale et les institutions scientifiques (Académie des sciences, Jardin du roi et Observatoire), organisent conjointement la collecte d'informations (envoi de spécialistes qualifies et recrutement de correspondants locaux) tout en supervisant des expéditions scientifiques. La 3eme partie (« lumières coloniales, enjeu et acteurs »), étudie les grands enjeux scientifiques de la colonisation au XVIIIe siècles : travaux d'aménagement, cartographie, botanique, agronomie, etc. Elle met en lumière la complexification des rouages scientifiques de la machine coloniale, et souligne l'émergement d'une population scientifique locale parfaitement intégrée aux réseaux de la république des lettres
