HIV infection has become a chronic disease since introduction of antiretroviral treatments. Despite the decline in mortality, the incidence of metabolic complications related to treatment and the infection itself are becoming more relevant. HIV infection promotes a pro-oxidative status that favors viral replication and the emergence of the metabolic disorders such as atherosclerosis and lipodystrophy.
