The basic thesis of the article is the conviction that the condition for an effective implementation of the formative function of humanistic education is reflection on the contemporary world, and especially on such disturbing and current problems as, for example, intercultural tensions, migrations and connected with them the refugee crisis. The analysis of texts addressing this topic in the Polish school may be a response to the ethical crisis of isolation from other people’s suffering and passivity towards evil, especially if the victims are people belonging to a different cultural or national community.
