The Attraction of American Education : An Aspect of Chinese Students in the USA

This research paper is a related study of my MA thesis (Immigration and Multiculturalism A Study of American Culture), which describes an outline of mainland Chinese students who are studying in American universities and colleges. 'International Students' in this paper are defines as students enrolled at institutions of higher education in the US who are not citizens of America, immigrants or refugees. Though they are not immigrants, they move to the US and live there for a relative long period. The USA has the world's largest international student population, who choose to broaden their education and life experience there. According to the annual survey report published by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by 8% to an all-time high of 671,616 in the 2008-2009 academic year while the number of international students - those enrolled for the first time at a U.S. college or university in the Fall 2008- increased by 16%. And, during 2010-2011, the number of students at colleges and universities in the USA increased by 5% to 723,277 and tends to grow year by year. In this paper, I focus on some typical ideas of current mainland Chinese students in America, who are joined into the multiculturalism of campus. To explain and analyze this topic, many statistics are taken in this paper and some web information was adopted. The purpose of this study is to understand a social phenomenon in current America from a view of an international student. Ultimately, in conclusion, I will answer the following questions: Why did Chinese students choose America? What challenges and impacts of Chinese students are posed by the American way of life? Why did some of Chinese students settle in the US after graduation? In addition, I have to mention that because the gap of economic development between urban and rural in China, at present, most countryside Chinese students cannot take part in the moving flux universally
