In this paper, the function of the clause intonation system in Japanese is analyzed within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. In this framework, the meaning of utterances is analyzed into three Metafunctions: Ideational, Interpersonal, and Textual. Another classification concerned with meaning is made in Strata : Semantics, Lexicogrammar, Phonology, and Phonetics. The analysis will be made combining Metafunction and Strata
