Heat-transfer coefficient distributions on both surfaces of a rotating disk are optimized to minimize Mises equivalent thermal stress by the combined use of genetic algorithm and analytical solutions to transient heat conduction and thermal stress problems in the rotating disk subjected to local heat generation near the outer radius. The transient temperature field in the rotating disk with arbitrary, radial change in the heat-transfer coefficient distribution is analyzed by the application of Vodicka\u27s method.
