Little is currently known about the distribution of head lice infestation in the United States, and there recent data the incidence prevalence of throughout the country. However, the inquiries from state and county health departments to the Center for Disease Control and recent articles in newspapers and periodicals indicate that the head louse is again emerging problem in this country. Most of the outbreaks that have received attention affected pupils in elementary, middle, and high schools. Health officials in at least state have also reported outbreaks in "hippie communities."
