O conhecimento sobre a composição de raios cósmicos de altas energias é fundamental na abordagem da maior parte das grandes questões referentes à astrofísica de altas energias. Entretanto, do ponto de vista experimental, determinar o tipo de partícula medida nesse regime de energia ainda é um enorme desafio e essa tarefa tem recebido especial atenção por parte das colaborações responsáveis pelos experimentos em atividade.
