This paper, which relies on empirical data that the author has collected over the six last years in Ireland, critically analyses the concept of "people of Irish extraction". It questions the meaning of this appellation at the time Irish elites have produced an open and inclusive representation of Irishness. It also explains how the Irish population abroad has been instrumentalised by Irish politicians and elites in order to boost the Irish economy and to defend the peace process.
