Complete scenographic solution of the opera: From the House of the Dead (Leoš Janáček)

The topic of my bachelor’s thesis is From the House of Dead. It is the last opera written by well-known czech composer, Leos Janacek. During one semester I have analysed and researched this composition, to look for forms and principles, which could be used in potential realisation. The aim of my work was to find an complete scenographic solution for this opera. As a result I am presenting you my suggestions, plans and steps of the whole working process. I am glad to bring you closer to Janacek’s composition and my interpretation of his opus. At first, I would shortly describe Leos Janacek’s life, his works and attitude towards Russian culture. Then, I will continue with an introduction of writer F. M. Dostojevskij, whose novel The House of the Dead has become an model for Janacek’s opera. I will also talk about the opera’s topic, which is slightly atypical for this kind of work, and present some realisations from his death till now. In the end I will describe my own concept as costumes and set designs
