In a silt-loamy soil the biodegradation of atrazine varied with the frequency of application. Respectively 40, 25 and 5% of the herbicide were mineralized during laboratory incubations in a bare fallow-plot formerly under maize receiving atrazine every year (SN), in a plot under a wheat-maize rotation receiving atrazine every other year (BM) and a plot under permanent grass never receiving atrazine (Pr). After microbial enrichments in liquid medium, the atrazine degradation was rapid in the SN and BM plots when atrazine was the sole source of carbon.
