Regards sur le peuplier, un arbre entre champs et forêts : du rationnel au sensible

The poplar and the lands where it is cultivated, give a good example of a current social question concerning the relations to spaces and nature. Research is attempting to identify the general elements of understanding, concerning the different ways of looking at the poplar and the concerned areas. The retained approach consists in a "selective reading" conducted in different fields and on different scales depending on the main aspect of the landscape. At first, the question is to identify the main appreciation models developed by the main scientific sectors (silviculture, agronomy, land development...), the main artistic sectors (painting, photography, literature). Then, surveys are conducted in 3 sectors representing very different geographic and social-economic contexts. Research indicates that other than a more and more specialized scientific and technical-economic model, there is an artistic model of the poplar constructed not only around the species but also around its forms of cultivation, laying-out and the poplar forest. However, the current relationships of populations with the poplar are understood only within the global, practical and sensitive relations to a given space and to nature in general: they are the mirror of land and landscape type of relations. There is also an "ethical" rejection of the poplar forest coming from the lack of reference models which would permit its aesthetic appreciation. The diagrams recently drawn by the artist have not been really released yet. However, the conditions necessary to the birth of an aesthetic feeling for this form of poplar forest are observed. Research also indicates that new ways of looking at it are appearing today corresponding to interpretation, and appreciation models of rural spaces affected by sometimes important evolutions (spaces affected by water such as valleys and marshlands, spaces of intensive forms of agricultural or silvicultural production). / Le peuplier et les territoires où il est cultivé fournissent un exemple d'une question sociale actuelle engageant les rapports à l'espace et à la nature. La recherche se propose d'identifier des éléments généraux de compréhension quant aux différents regards qui se posent sur le peuplier et les espaces concernés. La démarche retenue consiste en une "lecture sélective" menée dans différents domaines et selon différentes échelles, suivant le fil conducteur du paysage. Il s'agit dans un premier temps d'identifier les principaux modèles d'appréciation élaborés et diffusés par les sciences et techniques d'une part (sylviculture, agronomie, aménagement...), les arts d'autre part (peinture, photographie, littérature) ; dans un second temps sont réalisées des enquêtes dans trois secteurs présentant des contextes géographiques et socio-économiques très différents (marais de la Sensée (62), basses vallées angevines (49), plaine de la Garonne (47). La recherche montre que, outre un modèle technico-économique et scientifique de plus en plus spécialisés, il existe un modèle artistique du peuplier, constitué non seulement autour de l'essence elle-même mais aussi autour de ses formes de culture, l'alignement et la peupleraie en plein. Cependant, les relations actuelles des populations au peuplier ne se comprennent qu'au sein des relations globales, pratiques et sensibles, à un espace donné et à la nature en général : elles sont le miroir des rapports d'ordre territorial ou paysager. Par ailleurs, indépendamment des rapports aux espaces concrets, il existe un rejet "éthique" de la peupleraie, provenant de l'absence de modèles de référence qui en permettraient l'appréciation esthétique, les schémas récemment élaborés par l'art n'ayant pas encore réellement été diffusés ; toutefois sont observées les conditions pour que naisse un sentiment esthétique à l'égard de cette même forme de peupleraie. La recherche ouvre en outre des pistes tendant à montrer que de nouveaux regards sont aujourd'hui en émergence, correspondant à des modèles d'interprétation et d'appréciation des esapces ruraux affectés par des évolutions parfois importantes (espaces marqués par l'eau tels que vallées et marais, espaces portant des formes intensives de production agricole ou sylvicole)
