Geomembrane bursting test is easy to conduct and requires only light, unsophisticated equipment. The material is subjected to a 2D tension in the form of spherical caps. The article gives an inventory of the different tension tests used for geomembranes with their advantages and problems. An analysis of the constraints and distorsions caused by the bursting test is then developed on the basis of photogrammetric displacement measurements, of a finite element model and of infrared thermography. A simple model to calculate the constraints and distorsions is presented.
