Today frequent biological problems still limit the reliability of activated sludge facilities. As a result of their complexity, the control is sometimes difficult for operators in charge of full scale plants. First, this paper deals with the evolution of the understanding of these types of problems during the last decades. The main progresses made are particularly put forward. Secondly, we characterize briefly the main problems correlated with poor settling sludge, the principal drawback for activated sludge. Finally, in order to control biological problems, efficient solutions are suggested ; detailed results for full scale plants will be presented during this specific session by order authors. / Les problèmes biologiques, encore fréquents...
