Biological aerated filters associated to a physico-chemical treatment are studied in two wastewater treatment plants located in a coastal area (Barcarès and Saint-Palais/mer, France). The results (COD, BOD5 and SM) are satisfying for applied loads higher than conventional processes. Adaptation to organic load variations is not a real problem but the flow rate regulation must be found. Restarting, after a long non-operational period, occurs very rapidly (a few days). The compactness of the installations, the modular aspect, the integration in the environment are in favor of this system for coastal areas where the restraints related to available land weigh heavily on the choice of the technologies. The technical and economic optimization conc...
