The mean runoff of a water stream tends to diminish towards the downsteam part: this effect may be attributed to the decline of rainfalls with altitude, evaporation increase, infiltration and human consumption. These factors are all important along water streams of alluvial plains. Several examples show how this phenomenon is common in France. A consequence of this effect, called RESEDA effect here, is that water balances yield different results about the interannual availability of surface waters depending on the scale used to collect the data.
