This study tries to define a new method for forest site assessment, adapted to mediterranean areas. This method is based on models of water availibility, which is the main constrains for plants growth. Its is developped first on limestone areas of Provence. Two levels of models are developed : the first level is based on data, existing and available on the whole region (Geological and climatic maps, elevation regional data sets,...) which can be integrated in a GIS, to allow automatic mapping of ecological units of large areas. - at the second level, data available only at a local scale and in the field, (soil type and depth, local topography,...) are added in the models, to allow a detailed assessment of sites for aforestation projects or ...
