A new approach is proposed to design geotextiles + geomembrane lining systems in order to prevent localized mechanical damage, including puncture. The approach is based on the analysis of the elementary sollicitations and damage mechanisms of the geosynthetics. Some existing tests are presented with respect to the elemental sollicitations they represent, and are classified as either characterisation tests or empirical tests.
