Understanding the environment has become a requirement of society as well as a necessity to assure the long-term development of a region. The Alps represent not only a remarkable natural environment but also a fragile space, subject to numerous pressures. Equally, this is an area characterised by the specificity of its economic activities. This first overview of the environment in the French Alps has been undertaken to increase awareness and knowledge of the area. Throught a series of annotated maps, the aim is to illustrate both the environmental and socio-economic characteristics of the whole area, as well as the diversity of conditions within the region.
