Many reservoirs in the Alps are threatened by avalanches. The water displacement and the surge by the avalanche mass may cause overflow of a full basin. To prevent this, a sufficient freeboard has to be kept. To calculate the necessary height of this freeboard, it is essential to know not only the size, but also the number of avalanches that can reach the reservoir during an avalanche period. In lack of measurements at reservoir sites, we studied another valley from where fairly precise records are available, the Urseren valley in the Canton of Uri.
