The paper starts with emphasizing the general role of the third sector in generating change, as well as its importance for the feminist literature on substantive representation. I analyse the challenges and obstacles presented by the Communist past on the emergence of women NGOs in Poland. Analysing state policy, NGO activities, and perceptions of NGO actors, I highlight both the positive and negative impact of Poland's European integration of women’s NGOs. I conclude by discussing the lasting impact of the “survival period” of adaptation of women’s NGOs to the new framework in reflecting on future development of women NGOs in Poland.
