Interactive dance performance : movement data and the \u27materiality\u27 of the system

This paper describes a recent performance work I made using dance and live feed videoprocessing, 1 + x: mid-range projections, commissioned by the Seoul Contemporary DanceCompany and first performed in Melbourne in July 2005. This work forms a basis for discussingmy interest in creating performance images that reveal \u27interiority\u27. I am interested in how youembed the \u27feel\u27 of the human systematically in an interactive structure, and how that processcan produce a poetic that arises from the detailed and nuanced play between real and virtualimages on the same screen. How do you abstract and play with a performer\u27s movement, playwith it in real and virtual time, so that it gives the work an emotional charge? Its like playing withthe process of \u27becoming virtual\u27 - and I\u27m being deliberately Deleuzian about that - how do you\u27become virtual\u27 in the sense of melding performer and image so that the meaning existsbetween - in the connection between the two? This quest to get the energy, the \u27lived\u27, \u27felt\u27 quality of the movement into the imagery gives riseto research questions about how \u27presence\u27 is perceived in movement. What elements of theraw movement data do you need to keep and what can you throwaway, and still keep thepersonality, the emotion, the \u27life\u27 of that movement? How do you make a virtual, interactiveperformance system that has its own \u27materiality\u27?
