The reasons for considering culture-based fisheries as an aquaculture practice are presented. The need to develop culture-based fisheries, which are basically a nonconsumptive user of water compared to conventional aquaculture practices such as pond culture, to augment the aquatic food supplies, in the wake of increasing consumption of aquatic food, dwindling catches from the wild, and the decreasing rate of growth of conventional aquaculture is evaluated.The well-documented culture-based fishery practices of a number of countries are reviewed, and the development of these is traced.
