Morphological reaction of rivers due to sediment mining

In many rivers sediment is mined at same distance from the river mouth. Examples are the Brantas river at Java, Indonesia and the Mekong river, Thailand. This study contains the research of sediment mining in general. The sediment mining has its consequences on the river morphology: The bedlevel and the waterlevel decrease downstream as weIl as upstream from the point of mining. The waterdepth varies toa along the river. Figure 1.1 shows the changes of waterdepth, waterlevel and bedlevel in a new equilibrium situation, which can be determined in a theoritical way. This will be done in chapter 2. The changes along the river are of great importance for several hydraulic engineering structures: - With decreasing bedlevel bank protections may loose their stability; - Water inlets for irrigation works dry up when the waterlevel falls; - Navigation may become impossible when the waterdepth decreases.Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
