In the development and diffusion of major technologies, it is well known that standards provide an essential input, establishing compatibility or interoperability between components in the system (DTI, 2005). In addition, standards facilitate coordination and reduce complexity (Brunsson et al., 2000). Only after a standard has been adopted, the technology will thrive. Also in the geo-domain standardisation has an important role to play. Geostandards are developed and approved at a global level by ISO and OGC.
