Vertical monastery

To develop a new building typology for Buddhist Monastery in overcrowded scenario of Hong Kong and explore “sacred realm” via digital manifestation of Architecture. The aim is to design an alternative solution to accommodate fast growing number of temples in Hong Kong. Spaces that balance flexibility of use with highly specific environment in terms of disposition and character, this thesis, which aim to explore how such a balance can be achieved. At the same time, explore the potential of digital architecture through Buddhism philosophy; the principle of Chi energy and yin-yang attributes. In HK, lack of space is not only causing demand for dense high rise offices and housing but also for religious purposes, which emerge a new phenomenon of lack of “sacred” space and had become more apparent when there has been a renewal of interest in spiritual matters for the past decades, seen in the fast growth of religious belief in Buddhism. The architectural proposal explores a new framework for spiritual development to balance out contemporary intense work ethos and cultural pressure in the society, at the same time, creating an adaptive prototype for this increasing demand of sacred space.ArchitectureArchitectur
