Architecture of the Soviet avant-garde is widely known in its basic ideas. Specialized research, however, concerning the development of certain building types is still a desideratum. So, monographic studies of the communal housing typology are unknown as well as those of memorial typology. The building assignment of the workers' club is mentioned meantime in two research works, which are confined to the town of Moscow only. The history of the competition of the Palace of the Soviets was described repeatedly, but its political implications of change, together with the ones of sociology of art and theory of architecture were not brought together so far. This study aims at bridging these gaps in research work by the classification of four building types of social relevance. It concerns four separate analytic descriptions, which are brought together by one common base of research: All of the four classified building types are characterized by their initial commitment to the social Utopia, which disappears later. These ideologically determined processes of change took specific effects in each case: - In collective housing idealistic fundamentalist conceptions shifted to more realistic ones - The character of the workers' club changed from a doctrinal workshop of agitation, which required active participation of the workmen in a so-called "proletarian culture", to a free-time facility where cultural events are consumed passively. - The memorial mutated from an artistic tool to raise consciousness, to an instrument creating aesthetical but unrealistic worlds. - The Palace of the Soviets changed from a functional conference centre for a federal republic to a monument of the state's founder representing the centralized power of an autocratic system.Architectur
