When an aircraft is operating in static or near static conditions during taxiing or take-o a vortex can form between the ground and the intake. With engine diameters increasing, intakes are moving non-dimensionally closer to the ground and as a consequence the likelihood of vortex formation during the aircraft operating envelope is set to increase. To date there is little quantitative knowledge therefore a greater understanding is required. This research is aimed at providing an extensive quantitative parametric study of vortex formation leading to advanced design rules for future engines.
