The number of collaborative users in a cognitive radio network is selected by maximizing the effective throughput of the cognitive radio network that considers both the spectrum-sensing performance and the saturation throughput performance. Numerical results show that the optimum number of collaborating users depends on the physical-layer techniques used, the physical channel conditions, and the upper-layer network parameters. These results give useful guidance on choosing the number of collaborative users involved in collaborative spectrum sensing
