Escherichia coli endocarditis: a case report and review of the literature

Despite the frequency of Escherichia coli bacteremia, endocarditis is a very rare event. Review of the published literature yielded 127 cases with an overall mortality rate of 52%. Cases most often occur in elderly females with the urinary tract being the common source. Early surgical consultation is advised.
