The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing dramatically across the globe and in some areas has reached epidemic proportions. This increase in prevalence is primarily being driven by environmental factors, through 'modern age' dietary and exercise habits. Not only does this have significant implications for the individual in terms of developing the complications associated with the disease, but there are also significant health cost implications for Society. There are many challenges for the development of treatments for type 2 diabetes and its complications.
