Most systems encountered in practice are nonlinear to some extent due to inherent distortion introduced by the components of the system such as saturation or because they include deliberately introduced nonlinear effects (e.g. bang-bang controllers). Any system for which the super-position principle does not hold is defined to be nonlinear
