Since the late 1960s, Senegal suffered from the dramatic drought which affected all the Sahel of West Africa. Thirty years later, rainfall amounts well above the 1961-1990 average may announce the end of this period of aridity. Together with this rainfall increase, floods have been reported in most Senegalese cities in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Because of these floods, many affected areas have been abandoned and stricken population has to be rehoused in precarious conditions. Most analysts consider these floods as a new phenomenon, never observed before, and they are blamed on the exceptional heavy daily rainfall.
