peer reviewedThe issue of jurisdiction certainly constitutes one of the main challenges of what is commonly called globalisation, i.e. the rapid internationalisation of economic (and, to a somewhat lesser extent, of other) activities. Since legal regulation of these human activities is still largely state-based with the notable exception of the European Union, whose existence and the large body of rules it produces, also raises questions of jurisdiction rules on jurisdiction are necessary to define which part of these activities can be subject to regulation by a given State. This paper aims to examine what private international law has achieved to answer the question of jurisdiction
