The ocean is an important sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide, and the exchange of carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and ocean plays a critical role in determining the spatial distribution of atmospheric carbon dioxide. However, there is still a great deal of uncertainty in both magnitude and regional patterns of anthropogenic uptake associated with estimates of oceanic carbon fluxes.
