[[abstract]]Historical Transition of National Games Written by Postgraduate Student: Yun Dao Chueh Directed by Professor: Chien Chi Ming This research is divided into 3 main stages of time: the first one from 1946 to 1973, the second one from 1974 to 1987 and the last one from 1988 to 2001 to explain the National Games’ time background, as well as its development process and how it influences our nation’s physical education, national sports and physical competitions. Thus, we have reached at the following conclusions: 1. In 1946, for celebrating the 1st Anniversary of the Restoration of Taiwan and the former President Chiang’s birthday, the “Taiwan Province’s Games” was created officially under his instructions. 2. Since 1967, Taiwan province and cities hold Games respectively, even they spent a lot of money, but contestants’ result was rather mediocre. And then the Department of Physical collected all responses and opinions from all circles, and from 1974, the Games were hold by the Province and cities altogether, which was therefore changed into “Taiwan Districts’ Games”. 3. In 1997, upon the foundation of National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, furthermore, and the common consensus of “retrench the Province” was reached during the National Development Meeting, Taiwan Province has been voided since then. On the consequence of politic environment changes, the Province (District) Games for more than half century has been changed to “National Games”, which was hold from then on by the National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. 4. Affecting Physical education, national sports activity and athletics competitions, the National Games’ superiorities are synthesized as follows: (1) Constructing physical organizations, handling actively all kinds of operations (2) Increasing the opportunities of Games, building up sportive competitions seasons. (3) Developing traditional and new athletic items, increasing sports population. (4) Concreting national physicals development, fastening national subtraction. (5) Discovering outstanding sport contestants, raising the average of competition level. (6) Enhancing the experiences of hosting Games’, better preparation for big international Games. (7) Protruding local characteristics, integrating physicals and arts. (8) Increasing physical education facilities, assistance to pedagogy. (9) Constructing more stadiums, increasing the public’s exercise places. (10) Adding public’s exchange domestically, promoting local consolidation.
