[[alternative]]A Study of the Selection of Living Technology Teacher at the Junior High School Level in Taiwan

[[abstract]]The purpose of this study was to explore the qualification, procedures, and problems with its solution to recruit and select living technology teachers (LTT’s) at the junior high school level. Focusing on the selection of LTT’s in 2002 academic year, the researcher conducted a document analysis on 19 cases recruiting LTT, developed a questionnaire to solicit opinions from 28 LTT’s who successfully passed in selection, and interviewed with four stakeholders to clarify some problems and solutions. Consequently, the following 10 conclusions were made: (1) The basic requirements for LTT candidates are to hold a teacher certificate, and meet schools’ needs listed. (2) Computer capability, other subject specialties and administration commitment are often additionally required for LTT candidates, and good computer capability is anticipated. (3) Posting job vacancy, offering application forms, and application receptance are normally embedded in the LTT selection procedure, in which the application receptance usually lasts two days during June and July. (4) The stages of the LTT selection vary from one to three, and written examination, presentation, as well as interview are mainly included. (5) The overall review procedure of the LTT selection includes: initial qualification review, examination, and final review. Applicant’s details such as qualification, background, teaching ability, health conditions are main considerations. (6) Regarding selection fairness, school’s self-control is the key point. (7) Information regarding specific requirements and examination as well as written examination and presentation are inadequate on the job posts. (8) The job post ways are criticized as too limited and post time too short. (9) Current number of LTT’s is over-supplied. (10) Although new national curriculum integrates natural science (NS) with living technology (LT), schools still tend to recruit NS and LT teachers, respectively.
