The so-called 3 P sampling system (sampling with Probability Proportional to Prediction) is a variation of list sampling that does not require a list of population elements prior to the inventory. Every tree in a timber sale has to be visited and one needs an estimate of the total volume. In order to correct the total estimated volume, a small number of sample trees are selected according to a unequal-probability selection rule. The predicted tree volume is paired with a random number. Trees with predicted values larger than or equal to the random number are precisely measured.
