peer reviewedIn video stream transmission, one often proposes to solve the problem of the heterogeneity of the receivers by dividing the stream into several cumulative layers distributed over multicast transmission. A dynamic adaptation by the source of the number and size of layer bit-rates to the set of its receivers allows a better usage of the network resources. Efficient algorithms have been designed to do this adaptation. However, the encoding of a video stream in layers incurs an overhead relatively to the single-layer encoding of the same stream.
