This essay aims ut setting a refference framework for the evolution of Latin historiography, from the jirst annals to the late histonography. The main features of Carolingian historiography are then studied, especially its annalitic sources. The conquest of Barcelona by the Franks in 801 is taken as un example. The basic patterns about rigour and objectivity of the historiographic sources of Charlemagne's empire can be deduced fiom the way in which the carolingian annals tackle this historic event, of such importance for our history
